SFD 2007 Competition
Welcome to the 2007 SFD competition!
Software Freedom Day is proud to announce an exciting competition to get those creative juices going. With Software Freedom Day coming up fast on September 15th, we have some excellent prizes to help inspire you to create the best Software Freedom Day ever!
There are two fantastic prizes for the best SFD event, and another for the best OLPC project contribution to help take software freedom to everyone! The prizes are, you guessed it, three OLPC laptop computers courtesy of our prizes sponsor, Google and the OLPC project!
The competition will be judged by representation from the OLPC project and the Software Freedom International board. The deadline for submitting entries to comp@sf-day.org is 7th October 2007 (it was extended from the 30 September) - read the rules below for full details.
OLPC Sponsorship
We welcome Google as the sponsor of two of the major competition prizes for 2007, the OLPC computers. It's great to have Google on board supporting Software Freedom Day 2007 both as a prizes sponsor and a main sponsor.
Many thanks to the One Laptop Per Child project themselves for donating a third OLPC.
Details of the specific OLPC's are below:
Competitions
Best OLPC contribution or plan for contribution for community benefit
- The prize will be awarded to the top entry in this category. The prize is a new B4 OLPC, so particularly important for OLPC development and contributions.
- Entries will consist of written descriptions of the OLPC contributions and relevant supporting materials (such as photos, web links and scanned newspaper articles).
Any project which is deemed to contribute in a positive way to the OLPC project will be considered. This includes but is not limited to software development, hardware hacking, knowledge creation, games, and advocacy. Please see the OLPC wiki for ideas and inspiration.
- Entries will be judged on the scope of their applicability (the wider the reach of the project, the better), their technical excellence, user references, and positive publicity generated for OLPC.
- The OLPC contribution winner will be expected to deliver at least 2 follow up reports about their contributions within 3 months of the competition including documentation, video/audio, and photos.
Best SFD event
- The two prizes will be awarded to the top two entries in this category.
- Entries will consist of descriptions of the event, photos, web links, scanned newspaper reports and possibly other multimedia content.
- Entries will be judged on the scope and success of activities, innovativeness of the events, number of people reached, amount of publicity, and other criteria.
- Entries that involve the wider community (beyond the FOSS and geek community) and press coverage will be considered particularly successful.
General Rules
- The closing date for all entries is 7th October 2007 (it was extended from the 30 September) at 12h00 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The time of receipt of entries will be that indicated by the SFD mailing list archives.
