What is Software Freedom Day?

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

Many thanks to our Sponsors and Supporters without whom we could not make such an event happen.

5 days within...

And while we're five days within the opening of SFD 2010 registration a lot of things are happening. First we saw an amazing 100 teams register on the opening day! The registration is still going well strongly and due to the heavy traffic Linode has deemed necessary to give us a server upgrade (yesterday). This should ensure better site availability and pages loading response time. Most of the wiki bugs have been ironed out (mainly permission issues) and the Team Page Creation process should be a lot smoother now. We have also updated our CreateYourTeampage guide with much more extensive description, screenshots, explainations of some wiki markup tips for issues you may encounter as well as some tags explanations.

So now that you have registered your team (or soon will have) it is time to spread the word about SFD. We have set up a wiki page for us all to track places where we talk, advertise and contact people about SFD. Please help us to keep it up to date.

And the latest update of the day will be about our ongoing (and slow) efforts to migrate to OSM as a map solution. We have found a dedicated individual in the name of Niccolo Rigacci from Firenze, Italy who is actively working on it. One can see a preview here (albeit not working/being updated). So good luck with your preparations and happy SFD and keep talking to either through our mailing lists or IRC channel!

SFD 2010 Registration is OPEN!!

Software Freedom Day 2010 | Saturday, 18 September

Dear all, this is with a lot of struggles that we have finally managed to open the SFD 2010 registration! As you can see there is still a lot of ongoing work on the site, and this includes a New Wiki where you can create your team page, a new home page for all the information about Software Freedom International and other generic and important stuff and much more to come. I want to particularly thank Thilo, JM, Matt and Robert for helping out as well as our web infrastructure sponsors, that is Canonical and Linode for providing our little corner on the web. Due to the delay there will only be 10 days to get free CDs this year, so don't slack! And happy SFD preparations! Oh and by the way, the direct link to registering your team is here http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/register.html after reading the StartGuide and creating your team page of course.
