The Linux Society and the Hannah Maclure Exhibition, Cinema, and Performance Centre will be celebrating the global Software Freedom Day event, shared around the world this 20th September.

Everyone is welcome and please feel free to share this invitation around with all your friends and colleagues.

Software freedom day is an event that is held globally to support and celebrate Free and Open Source software. The Abertay Linux Society and the Hannah Maclure Centre are proud to announce a day full of talks designed to highlight the empowerment, liberty, innovation, ideas and community spirit that free software can offer people. In addition, at this year's Software Freedom Day we will also be screening "The Elephants Dream" and "Big Buck Bunny", two pioneering films developed and made using Free and Open Source software and released free online for everyone in the spirit of that freedom.

With topics such as Free Software and it's community, Windows and Free Software, Virtualisation technologies & Servers using Free Software, Open Source Communications and how communities can benefit. Free and Open Source Gaming, Open Source Security and it's community, there will be something to interest all, whether you are a developer , a user, confused or just plain interested. There will also be demonstrations of some of the practical applications of free and open source software on display during the event.

There will be a light yet free lunch served before the screening of the films, the event is free for everyone and open between 10am and 4pm on Saturday the 20th September. Feel free to attend the whole or event or just drop in, we will be glad to see you participate in this global event celebrating and promoting Software Freedom and it's many uses in benefiting everyone.

Free Software and the Community.

Talks inspired by Free Software and the global community that supports it. Surprisingly free software has a massive global community behind it, and people from all walks of life take an active involvement in developing, promoting, supporting it's use, many of them do this voluntarily. When you think of Software Freedom Day, imagine that there is 400 teams around the world holding events this year coinciding with this one, and everyone there is volunteering to do this. 400 teams, 100 countries, 20th September, one special day.

Arron Finnon - What is Free and Open Source Software

Arron's talk looks at what makes a program Free Software, and how Open Source software fit's in. Looking at how Free and Open Source software utilizes it's major differences with main stream proprietary software, and blossoms.

Rick Moynihan - Freedom & Control

Rick's talks centers on the duality between freedom and control. With a look at how vendors seek maximize control over the public own equipment, and how this can be used by corporations pushing their own agenda, and how that can spill into the Movie and Music industries, sometimes in the form of dubious deals. His talk will touch on aspects of DRM, Copyright, Copyleft, creative commons, and how Free software is more than just software.

Arron Finnon - Being part of the Free software community, from freedom comes elegance

Arron's talk looks at how the free software community is more that just developers, how the global community pushes it's self to an ethical and moral code of openness. That diversity of our community leads to this code being adopted in more than just software, and how this further adoption propels it's self to great innovation. With freedom to explore ideas, concepts and the ability to sharing knowledge comes liberty.

Windows Free and Open Source Software

Talks inspired by how Free and Open Source software, is not just in the realm to techies, but how many varied and simply brilliant alternatives for everyday activities can be found for Windows too. These talks are aimed at people who are just curious and are want to know more without having to change your PC.

Barry Carr - Show Stoppers

What's stopping you from trying Linux? Is it the hassle of finding the equivalents of all your favourite Windows software? If so, I'll show you how you can: access your email; surf the web; manage your contacts; synchronise your phone; manage your MP3 collection and edit your digit photos. Some of this software can be used on Windows so you can try them before you try Linux, if you like.

Paul Lancaster - Open Source on Windows

Paul's talk will look at how Free and Open Source software works on the Windows platform, and how most commercial programs on Windows can be replaced by Free and Open Source alternatives, in most case leaving the user with a superior solution, with examples.

Virtualisation use of Free and Open Source Software

Emulating a PC within a PC may same strange and a little techie, however this technology isn't just available to business or people that can afford it, this technology is available to everyone. It's this freedom that has lead to it being used in more ways than you can imagine.

It's scalable and flexiable and in the reach of everyone. With practical advise on how it can be used and deployed for a varriety of uses, such as community groups having there own MSN.

Talks inspired by the world of Open Source gaming and it's future. Many think that you can only play computer games on Windows system, and that all the best are focused on the proprietary finical model, however many will be surprised to find that's not quite true.

Hazel McKendrick & Philipp Geyer - Gaming, the open source way

This talk will cover how open source games to not need to be locked down to windows platform, and how their are many alternatives to commercial games out there. With examples, and boot and play games available, they will also be looking at the future of open source gaming.

Open Security

Many have argued that Open Source in it's nature is insecure by sharing it's code, however this tactic is more widely know as FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt). It plays on a concept called security by obscurity, good security is good no matter if you can see the mechanism that uses it.

Kris Findlay - Open Security

Kris's talk looks at how security is achieved by many people using and developing it, it's in this extensive peer testing process that security is found. Security does not need to be obscure to be secure. No experience of security is needed for this talk, as it is designed to make people think concepts rather than programs.

These talks are designed to show people that because it is free doesn't mean that it doesn't cost anything. Many business are starting to adopt open source and free software in the modern market place, and how alternatives to commercial led programs can free and inspire businesses everywhere.

Robert's talk will touch on lot's of open source topics that a line them self in the business world. Reminding people that Open Source means windows as well. Looking at open source licensing for business, and how people making open source software make their money. Covering why an open source is important, and how support for it comes in a many varied types.

Daniel Lamb - Linux Servers replacing Windows Servers

Daniel's talk will focus on how their are many alternatives for business using servers and how implementing these open source alternatives can actually save businesses money. If that wasn't enough he'll also be talking about how this can add extra functionality to there business. Open source backup solutions for protecting that important data, and how increased integration can be achieved. He'll also be looking at document management using Quotero
