Perth Software Freedom Day

Perth's SFD update:

We had great success handing out balloons and free CD's. Over the course of the three days we were able to hand out over 4000 live CD's and almost 2,500 Helium-filled balloons. It was definitely cool walking around the city centre of Perth on Saturday and in Fremantle on Sunday seeing balloons everywhere! If people in Perth didn't know about SFD before, they do now!

On Tuesday, one of the volunteers decided it would be cool to attach several CD's to a big bunch of balloons and release them into the sky. We ended up releasing about 50 balloons with it. It certainly got people's attention...we just hope it didn't cause any problems with the local air traffic controllers! I wonder if anyone found the CD's?

Perth's SFD Plan:

We will be handing out CDs and balloons at the following dates and times:

  • Saturday 15/09/2007, 1030-1400 Forrest Place and Murray St. Mall, Perth CBD

  • Sunday 16/09/2007, 1100-1400 Fremantle

  • Tuesday 18/09/2007, 1100-1400 Student Guild, University of Western Australia

We've got lots of custom-designed CDs and balloons printed up, so it should be a great event. We are looking to have lots of people wearing the green t-shirts with balloons to ensure the event is really visible.

We are still looking for volunteers - if you would be interested in donating 2-4 hours of your time on either Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday please get in touch with Patrick Coleman at blinken@gmail.com .

More information will also be available on the PLUG website shortly.

This event has been generously supported by iVEC and the Western Australian Supercomputing Project.
